Sedir Island, also known as Cleopatra Beach, in Muðla's Gulf of Gökova, attracts tourists because of its special sand, which is, in fact, protected by the Culture and Tourism Ministry. According to legend Cleopatra, the beautiful queen of Egypt who was obsessed by her beauty, brought the sand to the island from Egypt. Today, many people rush to the island in an attempt to replicate her beauty by lying on her sand. You must shower before leaving: Island official Celal Gül states that it is forbidden to enter the beach wearing a towel, footwear or clothes or to leave the beach without showering and adds, “Staff on the observation towers located on both sides of the beach warn swimmers not to carry any sand out into the sea on their bodies. Those who visit the island for the first time complain about this, but when they see the special beach they fully comply. We're trying to protect the sand, which only exists in Egypt, and, of course, on Sedir Island.” There are many ruins from the Hellenic and Roman periods on the island together with ancient theaters and agoras. The island is also full of olive trees. Tourists love the island: Every tourist who visits the island says they love it.
